Project 1: Form & Function
In this project the goal was to take a bridge prototype and transform it to fit a new function. A 30' x 40' object must be able to pass under the bridge, to do so the bridge needs to open. A mechanical systems was then developed based on our movement analogies to allow the bridge to open. With the new mechanical function applied the structure of the bridge then took shape based around the function.
Prototypes:

Sydney Harbour Bridge
Arch

Tokyo Gate Bridge
Cantilever

Alamillo Bridge
Cable-stayed

Artifacts:

Ratchet Crimper

Stamp

Corkscrew Wine Opener

Movement Analogies:

3x3 Conceptual combinations table:
With the 3 x 3 table I applied the movement analogies to the prototype to come up with 18 different concepts. The form of the prototypes were then adjusted to fit the new functions that were applied.

Preliminary Designs:
In my preliminary designs I reshaped the arch of the prototype to accommodate for the 30' x 40' object. I then added the mechanism to open the bridge and created a new structure to support the function.
